Home is where the heart is...right? Then, how did we get so much stuff? Your home (and workspace too) share to everyone the type of person and/or family that you are. If you have mounds of clutter, it typically raises questions on how put-together, clean, and well prepared you are. On the other hand, if your home is pristine (or even just clean), your friends and company will see everything more favorably. Now is the time to Declutter Your Home!

First step is to create your strategy. Some always like to tackle the hardest, first. Whatever your thing, most definitely do not skimp on the planning stage. Choose a starting point - kitchen, den, stairwell...whatever...just choose a place to begin. The duties are basically the same wherever you are. Empty the spot, clean, and return with just the things that belong there and are truly needed. Set a time limit for your tasks. You can also use a kitchen timer to help keep you on track. The first thirty minutes really should be quick sorting and clearing. The big trap is to get drawn into overly detailed tasks. Now is not the time for you to go through the box of photos.

Cluster similar items together as you sort. Clothes, mail, toys, etc. Don't worry too much if this is the final place for it, just get the items together. Keep, toss, and sell/donate will be the only three actions you will be taking on the specific groups after getting them together. It's fastest if you move the items outside the area temporarily while you decide whether to keep, toss or sell/donate. This also gives you an ideal opportunity to clean the area. Don't forget to check things off from your action plan as you complete them. Not only should you start to see floor, counters, etc. that you simply haven't seen in ages but you will also get that sense of accomplishment.

It can become (or already is) completely overwhelming. Just take it easy on yourself and pick your goals and objectives carefully so as to not get frustrated. It's also advised to work in bursts like 30 minutes on and then a 30 minutes off. You can keep increasing the time durations until you get to something which feels appropriate to you. Most important, carry on. It's not an overnight thing for most people to declutter your home. Keep at it and before you know it your home will be sparkling down the block.
